태을주 읽으면 신이 밝아진다
　태을주를 읽으면 상제님 말씀 그대로 신神이 밝아진다.
　
　참선을 하든 우리 전통의 국선도를 하든, 원래 석가모니가 공부를 해서 도통한 남방불교의 비파사나 공부법으로 하든, 다 똑같이 정신이 맑아지고 공부가 되기는 한다. 하지만 그보다 훨씬 더 본질적이고 근원적이고, 그 경계를 뛰어넘을 수 있는 공부법이 바로 태을주 수행법이다. 태을주 수행은 내 몸의 신을 밝혀 나의 신성을 즉각적으로 우주의 신성과 일체 되게 하고, 강력한 신권과 도력을 발동케 한다.
　
　영국, 미국 등지에서 열린 뉴 에이지 엑스포 행사장에서 현지인들에게 태을주를 읽어 주었을 때 겪은 그들의 체험담이나, 서구의 증산도 신도들이 평소에 체험한 태을주 수행 얘기를 들어보면, 정성껏 태을주를 읽으면 빠른 사람은 5분, 보통 30분, 한 시간 정도면 광명현상을 체험한다고 한다. 이렇게 속히, 강력한 기운이 열리는 공부는 처음 해 본다고, 이런 주문은 난생 처음 읽어본다고, 신비스런 체험 얘길 많이 한다.
　
　
　Chanting the Tae-eul Mantra brightens the spirit
　Sahng-jeh-nim said that chanting the Tae-eul Mantra brightens the spirit. Whether you practice Zen or traditional Korean Immort-alism, whether you study with the vipasyana method through which Shakyamuni Buddha became enlightened, meditation brightens your spirit. But Tae-eul Mantra Meditation is a more essential and fundamental method surpassing the others. When the spirit of your body is brightened by Tae-eul Mantra Meditation, your spirituality immediately unites with the spirituality of the universe. The mantra invokes strong divine authority and the power of dao.
　
　 In England, the United States, and other countries, we chanted the Tae-eul Mantra at New Age Expos. According to the stories of Westerners attending the expos and Western practitioners of Jeung San Do, when chanting the Tae-eul Mantra, it took just five minutes for sensitive people to experience the phenomenon of brightness, and most people could exper-ience it in about thirty minutes or an hour. They said that never before had they practiced a method of meditation that opened such powerful energy in such a short time. It was the first time in their lives that they chanted that kind of mantra. They had lots of stories to tell, stories involving mysterious experience.

주문은 진리 말씀을 상징하는 것
　참선에 빠져서, 참선만이 진짜 수행법이라고 생각하는 사람들은 주문(만트라, mantra) 수행공부를 좀 우습게 아는 경향이 있다. 주문의 세계를 잘 몰라서, 제대로 공부를 하지 않아서 잘못 알고 있는 것이다.
　
　아까도 말했지만 이 우주의 본성은 빛과 소리다.
　
　그렇다면 주문이란 무엇인가?
　
　주문의 조화세계가 무엇인지 알기 위해서는, ‘말(word)과 말씀(The Word)’의 차이를 제대로 알아야 한다. 내가 하는 ‘인간적인 말’이 성경신으로 충만하여 진실하고 정의로우면 ‘신의 말씀’으로 바뀌게 된다. 내 몸과 마음, 또는 내 몸과 우주 사이에 다리를 놓아 하나 되게 하는 신의 도구가 바로 생명의 근원 말씀인 주문이다.
　
　
　Mantras symbolize the Word
　Those who adhere to Zen practice tend to think little of mantra meditation, regarding Zen as the authentic method. They simply do not understand the world of mantras.
　
　 As already mentioned, the nature of the universe is the light and the word, light and sound. What then is a mantra? To have some understanding of the world of mantras, you must first clearly understand the difference between ?ord?and ?he Word.?When a person speaks truthful and virtuous words that are filled with sincerity, attentiveness, and faithfulness, those words become the Word, the Word of God. The divine tool that bridges your body and mind and that bridges your body and the universe is a mantra, the Word that is the basis of life.

　‘훔치훔치’는 천지부모를 찾는 소리
　그러면 본론으로 돌아가, 태을주의 의미에 대해 정리한다.
　
　“훔치훔치”
　
　상제님은 “훔치훔치는 천지부모를 찾는 소리”라고 하셨다. 천지부모를 찾는 생명의 소리! 이것 참 대단한 말씀이다. 아, 그대들이 인생으로 태어나, 이제껏 천지부모를 찾는다는 생각을 단 한 번만이라도 해 봤는가? 이 세상에 태어나 한평생 공부를 하고, 대학, 대학원을 나와 박사학위가 있다 해도, 또 지구촌을 누비면서 경험 안 해 본 것이 없다 해도, 그대가 진정으로 천지부모를 불러 본 적이 있는가? 기껏 필요하면 하느님 아버지나 몇 번 찾았겠지.
　
　헌데 지금 그대는 태어나서 처음으로 제 정신 갖고 천지부모를 찾고 있다!
　
　‘훔치훔치’는 천지부모, 우주의 근원을 찾는 소리다. 천지부모! 이것은 불교나 기독교에서 가르친 ‘하느님 아버지’ 또는 ‘부처’의 실제 경계를 포용하면서, 그것을 넘어선다. ‘훔치훔치’는 신도의 조화세계와 내 몸을 직접 연계해 주는 주문인 것이다.
　
　
　 Hoom-chee hoom-chee, the sound calling heaven and earth as our parents
　Now returning to the main subject, let us delve into the meaning of the Tae-eul Mantra. Concerning hoom-chee hoom-chee, Sahng-jeh-nim said that it is ?he sound calling heaven and earth as our parents.?The sound of life calling out to them! These are tremendous words. In your whole life, have you ever thought of searching for heaven and earth as your parents? Whether you have studied all your life, whether you have a Ph.D., or whether you have traveled the globe gaining all kinds of experience, have you ever called heaven and earth as your parents from the bottom of your heart? At most you probably have called out to God the Father a few times. Now, however, for the first time in your whole life, you are calling out to your parents, heaven and earth, with a clear mind.
　
　 Hoom-chee hoom-chee are the words through which you seek the origin of the universe, heaven and earth as your parents. Heaven and earth embrace and transcend God the Father in Christianity or Buddha in Buddhism. Hoom-chee hoom-chee is the mantra that connects your body directly to the creative world of spirits.

　‘훔치훔치’는 상제님이 붙여주신 것
　증산 상제님이 ‘훔리치야도래 훔리함리사파하’에 ‘훔치훔치’를 덧붙여 음양의 리듬을 넣어주셔서 태을주가 완성되었다.
　
　‘훔리치야도래 훔리함리사파하’는 과거 도교나 불교에서 부분적으로 읽은 것이다. 중국 당나라 때의 팔신선八神仙 가운데 한 사람인 여동빈이 ‘훔치’를 붙여서 주문을 읽었다는 기록이 있다. 도교의 경전에 정통 『도장道藏』 외에 전해 내려오는 판본이 몇 가지 있다. 거기를 보면 여동빈의 주문이 열 개 이상 있는데, ‘훔’ 자와 ‘치’ 자를 넣어 읽은 구절이 있다. 아주 멋지다. 내가 몇 시간 전에도 읽어본 바 있는데, “‘훔치’는 선지체仙之體, 곧 영원불멸한 선의 생명의 본신[體]이다.”라고 하면서, ‘훔’ 자 ‘치’ 자를 쓰고 있는 것이다.
　
　상제님이 “‘훔치훔치’는 천지부모 찾는 소리니라.”고 하셨다. 이 말씀의 속뜻이 무엇인지 한번 깊이 생각해 보라.
　
　
　 Hoom-chee hoom-chee, Sahng-jeh-nim? addition to the mantra
　Sahng-jeh-nim completed the Tae-eul Mantra and gave it a yin and yang rhythm by adding hoom-chee hoom-chee to it. The latter part of the mantra, hoom-nee-chee-ya-doh-rae hoom-nee-hahm-nee-sa-pa-ha, was chanted in Daoist and Buddhist practice. It is recorded that Lu Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals of China? Tang Dynasty, added hoom-chee to the mantras he chanted. A few versions of the Daoist Canon, other than the one considered ortho-dox, have been handed down. In them are found more than ten mantras of Lu Dongbin which include the syllables hoom and chee. They are wonderful. I read them once more a few hours ago. Hoom and chee were added with the comment, ?oom-chee?/i> is the substance of immortality, the substance of the everlasting life of immortality.
　
　 Sahng-jeh-nim said that hoom-chee hoom-chee is the sound calling out to heaven and earth as our parents. Reflect upon its deep meaning.

훔’은 창조의 근원 소리
　그러면 ‘훔’은 무슨 소리일까?
　
　이 ‘훔’ 자에 대해서는 불교에서 깨달음의 경륜을 가지고 있다.
　
　불교사전에서는 “‘훔’은, 모든 도를 닦는 이들이 온갖 고난을 뛰어넘어 궁극적으로 도달한 깨달음의 조화세계다. 다른 말로 우주의 진리 자체인 법신의 광명의 바다, 부처의 마음이다.”라고 정의한다. “모든 부처의 지혜의 바다, 우주를 비치고도 남는 마음 광명이 전부 ‘훔’ 자의 경계, ‘훔’ 자의 공덕에서 나온다.”는 것이다.
　
　‘훔’은 모든 소리를 머금고 있는 창조의 근원 소리다.
　
　“훔∼ 훔∼”
　
　‘훔’은 깨달음의 근원 마음이다. 우리의 본래 마음, 우주의 본심의 소리다. 법신 세계의 대생명력의 광명, 그 광명의 조화바다, 그 실상 경계가 바로 ‘훔’이다, ‘훔’!
　
　일본에서 출간된 『훔자의팿字義』는, ‘훔’의 조화정신에 대해 쓴 책인데, 거기를 보면 ‘훔’ 자를 분석해서 “‘훔’은 ‘아·하·우·마’라는 네 글자로 구성되어 있다”고 한다. ‘훔’은 이 우주의 법신과 화신과 응신의 기운으로 구성돼 있다는 것이다. 한 마디로 부처의 팔만사천법문 깨달음의 세계를 상징하는 언어가 ‘훔’이라는 말이다.
　
　훔은 영원히 부서지지 않는 우주의 대생명 자체, 금강신 자체다.
　
　
　 Hoom, the basic sound of creation
　Then, what kind of sound is hoom? About the word hoom, Buddhism has reached a level of enlightenment. According to a Buddhist dictionary, hoom is the creative world of enlightenment to which all seekers ultimately arrive after overcoming all adversity. In other words, it is defined as buddha-mind, as the sea of brightness of dharma body, cosmic truth itself. The sea of wisdom of all buddhas, bright-ness of mind that illuminates the whole universe, comes forth from the realm of the sound hoom and from its virtue. Hoom is the basic sound of creation that contains all sounds in it.
　
　 Hoom is the original mind of enlightenment, the sound of our original mind, the sound of the original mind of the universe. A Japanese book entitled The Meaning of the Word Hoom expounds the creative spirit of hoom, saying that hoom comprises four sounds: ahh, hah, ooh, mah. It says that hoom consists of the energy of the universe? dharma body, body of bliss, and assumed body. In short, hoom is the word that symbolizes the world of Buddha? enlightenment, all eighty-four thousand dharma words. Hoom is the indestructible life of the universe; it is the diamond body itself.

 

태을천은 인간 생명과 깨달음의 근원 하늘
　이 우주에 태을천이라는 하늘이 있다.
　이 태을천이 어디일까?
　증산 상제님이 이 우주는 서른세 개의 각기 다른 영적 차원의 하늘로 이루어졌다고 하셨다. 불가에서도 33천을 얘기하고, 도교에도 동서남북 각기 팔천八天씩 32천이 있고, 중간에 중앙천이 있다고 한다.
　
　그러면 이 대우주의 33천 가운데, 우리 인간이 생명을 받고 깨달음을 받는 생명의 근원 하늘이 어디인가?
　
　바로 태을천이다, 태을천!
　
　태을천을 부르는 태을주를 몇 년만 잘 읽으면, 이 우주의 별자리가 수평으로 보이면서 그 중심에 있는 태을천 별이 보인다. 그것은 누구도 다 볼 수 있다. 그걸 보면 너무도 경이롭기 때문에 저도 모르게 ‘야, 우리가 말하는 영적 차원의 인간의 마음 세계라는 게 이런 것이로구나. 우리들 내면세계라는 것이 이런 거로구나. 내 마음이 우주보다 더 큰 세계이구나! 이제까지 헛살았구나.’ 하는 생각을 하게 된다. 놀랍지 않은가! 한마디로 세상 보는 눈이 다 뒤집어지는 것이다.
　
　
　Tae-eul-chun, the source of human life and enlightenment
　In the universe, there is a heaven called Tae-eul-chun. According to Sahng-jeh-nim, the universe consists of thirty-three heavens in various spiritual dimensions. Buddhism and Daoism also mention thirty-three heavens. In Daoism they say that there are eight heavens in each of the four directions and one more in the center. Among the thirty-three heavens, Tae-eul-chun is the one from which humans receive their life and enlightenment.
　
　 After a few years of chanting the Tae-eul Mantra, in which you call out to Tae-eul-chun, you can see the constellations of the universe horizontally before you with the star of Tae-eul-chun at the center. Anybody can see that. It is such a marvellous sight that one would think: ?his is what we call the spiritual dimension of the human mind. Such is our inner world. My mind is larger than the universe. Oh, I have lived in vain so far.?Isn? it amazing? Our view of the world is overturned.

곡조와 리듬을 잘 맞춰서 읽어야
　“훔치훔치∼ 태을천 상원군∼ 훔리치야도래∼ 사파하∼ ”
　
　자, 주문 읽을 때는, 무엇보다 운치가 있어야 한다. 그리고 곡조를 잘 맞춰야 한다. 주문 소리의 높고 낮음(고저)과 청탁, 즉 어떤 때는 맑고 어떤 때는 좀 빠지게 읽는 것, 그게 곡조인데, 이에 대한 상제님 말씀이 있다.
　
　이 글에 고저청탁의 곡조가 있나니 외울 때에 곡조에 맞지 아니하면 신선들이 웃으리니 곡조를 잘 맞추라.(道典 5:121:9)
　
　주문 읽을 때, 곡조에 안 맞으면 신명들이 듣기 싫어서 손가락질을 한다는 말씀이다. 주문을 읽으면, 그 소리에 신명들이 취해서 기운이 서로 감응하려고 경쟁이라도 하듯 해야지, “야, 이거 유치한 놈이다. 겨우 그렇게 밖에 못 읽느냐?”고, 신명한테 손가락질 당하면 쓰겠는가? 사람은 신명보다 더, 신명은 사람보다 더 일심정성으로 수행을 잘하겠다고 달라붙어야 성공적인 수행의 길로 가는 것이다.
　
　따라서 곡조와 리듬을 잘 맞춰 읽어야 한다.
　
　“훔치∼훔치∼”
　
　일반적으로 서양인들은 1박 3박, 홀박을 세게 읽는다고 한다. 동양은 뒤쪽을 강하게 읽고.
　
　“훔치′∼훔치′∼ 태을천′ 상원군′∼”
　
　서양의 경우에는 “훔′치∼훔′치∼ 태′을천 상′원군∼” 이렇게 된다. 음양으로 대조되는 맛이 있다.
　
　하지만 그런 게 중요한 게 아니다. “장차 동서양을 비빔밥 비비듯 하리라.”(道典 2:48:3)고 하시며 상제님이 동서 문화의 기운을 다 비벼놓아 버리셨으니, 그냥 읽고 싶은 대로 자연스럽게 읽으면 된다. 리듬만 잘 맞으면 된단 말이다.
　
　“훔치훔치∼ 태을천 상원군∼ 훔리치야도래∼ 훔리함리 사파하∼”
　
　주문 읽을 때마다, 그대의 리듬은 끊임없이 새로워진다.
　
　
　Chant with melody and rhythm
　It is of utmost importance to chant a mantra gracefully and melodiously. Melody refers to the high and low of the chanting sound, and whether it is clear or cloudy. Referring to a mantra, Sahng-jeh-nim said:
　
　
　In this writing there is a melody of high and low, clear and unclear. If your chanting is not melodious, immortals will laugh. Chant melodiously. (Dojeon, 5:121:9)
　
　
　 When your chanting is out of tune, spirits are reluctant to listen and point their fingers at you. Chanting should be such that spirits, intoxicated by the sound, compete to respond. Otherwise, spirits will turn away from you, saying, ?ou are immature. Is that the best you can do??You will be on the way to successful meditation when you try harder than the spirits, and the spirits try with one mind to meditate harder than you. Accordingly, chanting must be with rhythm and melody.
　
　 In chanting, Westerners generally give stress to the first beat, whereas Easterners usually give stress to the last beat. Easterners will chant Hoom-chee~ hoom-chee~ Tae-eul-chun Sahng-wun-goon~. on the other hand, Westerners will chant Hoom-chee~ hoom-chee~ Tae-eul-chun Sahng-wun-goon~. Between these two there is the contrast of yin and yang.
　
　 That, however, is not what matters. Sahng-jeh-nim said, ?n the near future, East and West will be mixed like a bowl of rice and seasoned vegetables.?Since Sahng-jeh-nim has already mixed the energy of Eastern and Western culture, you have only to chant naturally, as you please. It is all right as long as the chanting is rhythmical. Every time you chant, your rhythm is constantly renewed.

상원군上元君님은 인류의 원 조상, 도신道神의 뿌리
　그러면 태을주에 나오는 ‘태을천 상원군님’은 누구신가?
　상원군上元君에서 상上은 가장 높다는 뜻이다.
　그 다음 원군元君을 알아야 하는데, 원군은 무슨 뜻일까?
　
　이 원元은 으뜸, 근원, 첫머리, 가장 지극하다는 뜻이다. 상원군님은 동서양 인류의 원 조상이다.
　
　상원군님은 동서 인류의 원 조상이면서, 깨달음의 역사에서 도통을 열어주는 도신道神의 원 뿌리이시다.
　
　바로 이 상원군님이 태을천의 주신主神으로 계신다.
　
　이를 볼 때 우주 도통道通의 역사의 비밀이 증산 상제님에 의해 처음으로 제기되고 있는 것이다. 곧 상제님을 알아야 태을주의 상원군님의 비밀을 알게 되고, 태을주의 도비道秘는 상제님의 도 세계를 알아야 제대로 풀린다. 이것을 명심해야 한다.
　
　
　Sahng-wun-goon, the originator of humanity and root of dao spirits
　Who then is Tae-eul-chun Sahng-wun-goon in the Tae-eul Mantra? Sahng in Sahng-wun-goon means ?he highest.??un?means ?he first,??oundation,??rigin,?or ?o be the utmost.?Sahng-wun-goon, the originator of humanity and root of dao spirits, opened enlightenment in the history of awakening. Sahng-wun-goon is the main spirit of Tae-eul-chun.
　
　 This shows that the secret of cosmic enlightenment has been revealed for the first time by Sahng-jeh-nim. You are aware of the secret concerning Sahng-wun-goon of the Tae-eul Mantra when you know Sahng-jeh-nim. The secret concerning the Tae-eul Mantra is revealed only when you are acquainted with Sahng-jeh-nim? dao. This should be kept in mind.

‘훔리치야’의 뜻
　태을주 주문의 가장 중요한 정신은 “훔리치야”에 들어있다.
　
　상제님은 이 “훔리치야”에서 ‘훔 자, 치 자’를 떼어내서 태을주를 완성해 주신 것이다.
　
　‘훔’은 이 우주생명, 이 우주의 법신, 대우주의 생명 바다를 통관通觀한 소리다. ‘훔’은 이 우주의 조화세계의 힘과 지혜, 광명을 말한다.
　
　‘치’란 ‘하나가 된다, 크게 정한다, 한 번 정해서 영원히 불변한다[大定不變]’는 뜻이다.
　
　따라서 ‘훔치’란 ‘천지의 조화생명 바다와 내가 하나가 되어 영원히 변치 않는다’는 뜻이다.
　
　그리고 ‘훔리치야’를 떼어 보면, ‘훔리’에서 ‘리’는 산스크리트어로 신도神道, 신의 세계를 뜻한다. 그러니까 ‘훔리’에서 ‘훔’은 비인격인 천지 조화생명의 세계이고, ‘리’는 인격신의 세계다. 바로 여기서 이 우주의 도 세계의 음양적인 두 얼굴, 인격과 비인격 신도神道세계가 통합되는 것이다. 이것은 대단히 중요한 내용이다. ‘훔’과 ‘리’는 진리 세계의 근본 명제이기 때문이다.
　
　“훔리∼”
　
　자, 우리가 이렇게 “훔리” 하고 소리를 내면 내 몸이 온 우주 생명계와 하나 되고, 동시에 신의 조화세계를 찾아가는 것이다.
　
　그 다음, ‘치’는 아까도 말했듯이, ‘하나가 된다, 굳힌다, 오른다’는 뜻이다. 수레바퀴를 굴려 밀고 올라가듯, ‘천지생명의 조화세계, 진리의 바다로 내가 올라간다[昇]’는 말이다. 다시 말해서, ‘고통과 분열과 죽음을 인식하는 자아의식(self-ego)의 감옥에서 나와, 대우주의 본래의 영원한 조화세계로 들어가 진리의 화신이 된 나, 곧 참나(眞我: True Self)로 태어난다’는 말이다.
　
　또한 ‘야’는 ‘크게 외친다’는 뜻이다.
　
　따라서 ‘치야’는 ‘내가 우주생명의 무궁한 조화세계와 하나가 되어, 그 생명의 세계를 크게 노래한다, 외친다’는 말이다.
　
　‘훔치훔치’가 따로 떨어져 나와, 이 우주의 생명의 실상과 신의 조화세계를 찾는 소리, 즉 천지부모를 부르는 소리로 구성되는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다.
　
　
　
　The meaning of hoom-nee-chee-ya
　Hoom-nee-chee-ya contains the core spirit of the Tae-eul Mantra. Using the hoom and chee from this phrase, Sahng-jeh-nim completed the Tae-eul Mantra. Hoom is the sound that has surveyed the universe? life, its dharma body, its sea of life. Hoom stands for the power, wisdom, and brightness of the creative change of this universe, while chee means ?o be one?or ?o decide and never change.?Hoom-chee means that the meditator becomes one with heaven and earth? sea of creative life and remains unchanged forever.
　
　 In hoom-nee-chee-ya, nee is a Sanskrit word for the way of spirits or the spirit world. In hoom-nee, hoom stands for overall life force of creative change in heaven and earth, whereas nee stands for the world of individual spirits. In these two syllables, the two faces of the dao of the universe are synthesized, one yin and one yang. The spirit world has both aspects: the impersonal and the personal. This is of utmost importance. Hoom and nee are fundamental notions. In pronouncing hoom-nee, your body becomes one with the entire cosmic life, and at the same time searches for the spirit world of creative change.
　
　 Chee, as already mentioned, means ?o become one,??o consolidate,?or ?o ascend.?It means that, as if rolling the wheels of a wagon, you ascend to heaven and earth? creative world of life, to the sea of truth. In other words, it means that freed from the prison of ego which recognizes suffering, disunion, and death, you are reborn as the true self, as an incarnation of truth, and enter the universe? original world of eternal creative change. Ya means ?o call out loudly.?Chee-ya accordingly means to sing and call out loudly to the boundless world of cosmic life, having been united with it.
　
　 Herein lies the reason why hoom-chee hoom-chee became the sound that calls out to the reality of cosmic life and the creative world of spirits, namely the sound calling out to heaven and earth as our parents.
